About Us

Chinmaya Mission Ottawa is part of a worldwide organisation founded by devotees of Swami Chinmayananda in 1953 with the objective of spreading the knowledge of Vedanta to anyone of any walk of life to aid them in becoming positive contributors of society.

The organisation has since grown to encompass a range of spiritual, educational, medical, social and charitable activities around the globe. The motto of Chinmaya Mission is to give maximum happiness to maximum people for maximum time.

Swami Tapovanam was a consummate Vedantin, a strict teacher, poet and a sage of great wisdom and tranquility. He was a pristine glacier of Self-knowledge, a saint of the highest order. That Truth, which Swami Tapovanam realised and indicated in all his teachings is beyond words, as much as he himself was. Swami Chinmayananda said of his Guru, “He was a God without temple, a Veda without language”.

The life of Swami Chinmayananda was one of extraordinary spiritual strength, immeasurable love and tireless service. In less than half a century, he has left behind a worldwide organisation, hundreds of institutions, and millions of devotees. This was all aimed at a single theme, discovering the Eternal within.

Swami Tejomayananda, who was appointed the Head of Chinmaya Mission Worldwide in 1993, has worked tirelessly to fulfil the vision of his Master, initiating major projects to advance Swami Chinmayananda’s vision, teachings and glory. Swami Swaroopananda has now been bestowed by Swami Tejomayananda the privilege to serve as the Head of Chinmaya Mission Worldwide from 19 January 2017.

In an era ripe with scepticism and confusion about matters spiritual, Swami Swaroopananda is a rare voice that blends authenticity with accessibility; theory with self- practice; logic with heart.

Pujya Gurudev Swami Chinmayananda visits in the 70s and 80s motivated a core group of families to to begin Bala Vihar classes in Ottawa. After Gurudev’s last visit in 1991, the Chinmaya movement in Ottawa kicked into high gear. In 1995, the Bala Vihar classes moved to a community centre.

Chinmaya Mission Ottawa continued to grow. Sunday classes for families, youth camps, summer Bala Vihar camps, Acharya visits for lectures, seminars and family camps provided activities all year around. Several gyana yagnas by visiting Swamijis provided the much-awaited spiritual sustenance for the earnest seekers in the community at large.

In 2013, through the collective efforts of the community, the Chinmaya Bharati was purchased. The Chakraburttys were instrumental in the purchase of the building, providing moral support and immense financial support.

Within a few years, Maa Saraswati arrived during Navaratri, making the Center complete. It has become a hub of intense activity, with a full family program on Sunday mornings, and classes for yoga, and study classes for young professionals and adults during the week, to name a few.

Every July for 2 weeks, the Center is overrun with children ages 6-12 for the annual summer camp. They are supervised by teenage volunteers who have completed the Bala Vihar program, under the guidance of teachers and parents.

Chinmaya Mission Ottawa is always grateful to all the founding families and all the families that provide continued support in various ways.

Hari Om!
