Thoughts on Sri Krishna Tattva by Swami Chinmayananda

[Excerpts from commentaries, articles and letters by Swami Chinmayananda]

KRISHNA is the Mysterious Glory that has kept up the culture of this nation for thousands of years. In his full divine uniform of omnipotence and omniscience, Krishna wears the aura of a God descending upon the earth!

Krishna is an objectified representation of the Formless Infinite Truth — Sree Krishna, the Paramatman. Krishna, the Self is the Source of all joys and achievements in the world of Prakriti. Krishna is the Vital Life Principle in contact with which the insentient mineral deposits bearing the shape and name of the body-mind-intellect gain for themselves the scintillating look of intelligence and sentiency.

Expression of infinite

Lord, the Supreme Purushottama, descends to the form of a mortal to reorientate our forgotten immortal Dharma and to put our decadent culture back again on its high pedestal.

The Blue Boy of the Jamuna banks — ever clothed in yellow garb, and singing away upon His flute, sending everyone around him crazy with delight and joy — is a maddening picture of endless Vedantic suggestions and imports!

Blue is the colour of the immeasurable, the Infinite. This Infinite, the Blue Boy, is clothed in yellow robes. Yellow is the colour of earth. The Infinite expressing through earth is Sri Krishna — the Supreme “embodied” is Sri Krishna Paramatma: this is the concept of the Avatar.

Krishna’s entire life is a constant unveiling of His spirit of detachment. The life of the Lord till the moment of the war has been a perfect life of complete detachment and even then — even though He had nothing that He had not gained, nor had anything further to gain — He was spending Himself constantly in activity, as though work is to Him a rapturous game of enthusiasm and joy!

Role model

Lord Krishna’s life is an example, an ideal for man to change his attitude in life – how he should live and perform his duties.

He was Life itself — the warm radiant Life!! Ever Energetic and Enthusiastic, Krishna courted all those in trouble with His infinite cheer, solved all their problems and lived tirelessly serving others. He constantly remained in everything and yet far away from all!

He was the Center of Attraction — He was the most important personality in all major political events of His time! He advised on diplomacy, statecraft, war, etc., but never sat on any throne, won or saved through influence and might. He advised, but never imposed His will upon others. He seemed to watch from afar, though living under the same roof. He actually lived all His life what He preached in the Geeta later, without attachment — loving, serving and working but caring not for the fruits; he ever mingled with everything , yet was always far away from all, always.

A perfect Yogi, He lived a life full of activity serving all, at all times — but keeping Himself more as a spectator of all happenings. He lived here amidst all more as a “sojourner” upon earth than as a native of it!!

Wisdom of Shree Krishna

Krishna is not a mere mortal teacher capable of only giving some intellectual ventilation and spiritual discourses; He is Himself Divine and a Master of Yogas. Lord Krishna (Guru) alone has the Pure Wisdom that can rub out doubt and quieten the agitations caused by it in the bosom of Arjuna (student).

Krishna, the greatest Karma Yogin, freely lived the thickest of life — His game of hastening the doom of the bad and the redemption of the good; His game of declaring to the world that He can love as Love alone can, and yet can ever remain completely and divinely detached; His game of making kingdoms and giving them away to the rightful to rule over and enjoy; His game of being in everything and yet identifying with nothing — yet never let Himself down from the Consciousness of the Divine Essence!!

Crushing the mind

When the river of “life” is poisoned by the serpent Kaliyan (lusty ego), the waters so poisoned by it, bring temporary diseases (forgetfulness) to those who partake of it. The Lord, out of His infinite compassion, dives down to dance on the many-headed dragon, the “mind”.

When we keep the Lord’s name in our mind and allow Him to dance in the chambers of our heart, under His angry tread, the mind gets crushed. The Supreme Lord (Krishna) stands above the serpent (ego) and makes the serpent vomit out all its poison by His dance of Bliss!

All its vasanas are brought out, and the mind is ordered to return to the ocean of PURITY and live there — ever after!! The Lord will help each one. The Divine Grace shall punish the Kaliyan within, dance on his hood, tear his vanity, make him surrender and promise to move away.

Take refuge in Shree Krishna

KRISHNA — this Power is in every one of us. It is for us to make it bright. To invoke Him is only to claim Him. “He alone gains Him, who chooses Him”. Lord Krishna is both the way and the goal. He alone is our Gathi.

Lord Krishna can fulfill all the desires of those who take their refuge in Him. To meditate upon Him with all our mind and to awake to the State of Krishna-Consciousness is to awake to a larger, vaster, infinite awareness of the meaning of life.

Krishna’s life is, overall, a message of cheer and joy. His doctrine of life insists that “to weep is folly and to smile is wisdom.” “Keep smiling” seems to be Krishna’s philosophy, put in two words. Once we learn to surrender everything to Him, your Yoga-Kshema “I shall look after”, is not an empty promise of Krishna in the Geeta.
