Verse 1

न निरग्निर्न चाक्रियः ||१||

śrī-bhagavān uvāca |
anāśritaḥ karma-phalaṁ
kāryaṁ karma karoti yaḥ |
sa saṅnyāsī ca yogī ca
na niragnir na cākriyaḥ ||1||

The Blessed Lord said:
One who performs their bounden duty without depending on the fruits of actions is a sannyasi and a yogi; not just one who has renounced rituals (fire) and actions.

Verse 2

yaṁ saṅnyāsam iti prāhuḥ
yogaṁ taṁ viddhi pāṇḍava |
na hyasaṅnyasta-saṅkalpaḥ
yogī bhavati kaścana ||2||

O Pāṇḍava, please know yoga to be that which they call renunciation; no one verily becomes a yogi who has not renounced aimless thoughts.

Verse 3

शमः कारणमुच्यते ||३||

ārurukṣor muner yogaṁ
karma kāraṇam ucyate |
yogārūḍhasya tasyaiva
śamaḥ kāraṇam ucyate ||3||

For a muni or sage who wishes to attune to yoga, selfless dedicated action is the means. For the same sage who is attuned to yoga, stillness is the means.

Verse 4

योगारूढस्तदोच्यते ||४||

yadā hi nendriyārtheṣu
na karmasvanuṣajjate |
sarva-saṅkalpa-saṅnyāsī
yogārūḍhas tadocyate ||4||

When one is not attached to sense-objects, when one is not driven by selfish actions, and has renounced all aimless thoughts, then one is attuned to yoga.

Verse 5

आत्मैव रिपुरात्मनः ||५||

uddhared ātmanātmānaṁ
nātmānam avasādayet |
ātmaiva hyātmano bandhuḥ
ātmaiva ripur ātmanaḥ ||5||

Let a person lift oneself by one’s own Self! Let one not lower oneself by one’s own self. The Self alone is the friend and the self alone is the enemy of oneself!

Verse 6

वर्तेतात्मैव शत्रुवत् ||६||

bandhur ātmātmanas tasya
yenātmaivātmanā jitaḥ |
anātmanas tu śatrutve
vartetātmaiva śatruvat ||6||

The Self is the friend of the self for one who has conquered the self by the Self, but to the unconquered self, the self itself stands in the path like an enemy.

Verse 7

तथा मानापमानयोः ||७||

jitātmanaḥ praśāntasya
paramātmā samāhitaḥ |
śītoṣṇa-sukha-duḥkheṣu
tathā mānāpamānayoḥ ||7||

A person who is peaceful and controlled is balanced in heat and cold, pain and pleasure, and in honor and dishonor. Such a person is well established in the Self.

Verse 8

समलोष्टाश्मकाञ्चनः ||८||

jñāna-vijñāna-tṛptātmā
kūṭastho vijitendriyaḥ |
yukta ityucyate yogī
sama-loṣṭāśma-kāñcanaḥ ||8||

The yogi – who is satisfied with knowledge and wisdom, who remains unshaken, who has conquered the senses, and to whom dirt, stones, and gold are the same – lives in harmony.

Verse 9

समबुद्धिर्विशिष्यते ||९||

suhṛn-mitrāryudāsīna-
madhyastha-dveṣya-bandhuṣu |
sādhuṣvapi ca pāpeṣu
sama-buddhir viśiṣyate ||9||

One who feels the same towards good-hearted friends and to enemies, towards the indifferent, neutral, hateful, and relatives, and to the righteous and unrighteous, excels.

Verse 10

निराशीरपरिग्रहः ||१०||

yogī yuñjīta satatam
ātmānaṁ rahasi sthitaḥ |
ekākī yata-cittātmā
nirāśīr aparigrahaḥ ||10||

The yogi should constantly practice concentration of the mind, remaining alone in solitude, with the mind and body controlled. Thus the yogi is free from hope and greed.

Verse 11

चैलाजिनकुशोत्तरम् ||११||

śucau deśe pratiṣṭhāpya
sthiram āsanam ātmanaḥ |
nātyucchritaṁ nātinīcaṁ
cailājina-kuśottaram ||11||

Establish a firm seat in a clean spot, neither too high nor too low, made of a cloth, a skin, and kuśa-grass, one over the other.

Verse 12

योगमात्मविशुद्धये ||१२||

tatraikāgraṁ manaḥ kṛtvā
yata-cittendriya-kriyaḥ |
upaviśyāsane yuñjyāt
yogam ātma-viśuddhaye ||12||

At that seat – having made the mind single-pointed, with the activities of the mind and the senses controlled – practice yoga for the purification of the mind.

Verse 13

दिशश्चानवलोकयन् ||१३||

samaṁ kāya-śiro-grīvaṁ
dhārayann acalaṁ sthiraḥ |
samprekṣya nāsikāgraṁ svaṁ
diśaś cānavalokayan ||13||

Firmly hold the body, head, and neck straight, focus on the tip of the nose, without looking around.

Verse 14

praśāntātmā vigata-bhīḥ
brahmacāri-vrate sthitaḥ |
manaḥ saṁyamya mac-cittaḥ
yukta āsīta mat-paraḥ ||14||

The yogi is seated balanced, with the heart serene and fearless, firm in the vow of brahmacarya, with the mind controlled, always thinking of Me, and having Me as the Supreme Goal.

Verse 15

मत्संस्थामधिगच्छति ||१५||

yuñjann evaṁ sadātmānaṁ
yogī niyata-mānasaḥ |
śāntiṁ nirvāṇa-paramāṁ
mat-saṁsthām adhigacchati ||15||

Thus, always keeping the mind balanced, the yogi, with the mind controlled, attains the Peace residing in Me, which culminates in total liberation (nirvāṇa or mokṣa).

Verse 16

nātyaśnatas tu yogo’sti
na caikāntam anaśnataḥ |
na cātisvapna-śīlasya
jāgrato naiva cārjuna ||16||

Yoga is not possible for one who eats too much or too little.
Yoga is not possible for one who sleeps too much or too little, O Arjuna!

Verse 17

yuktāhāra-vihārasya
yukta-ceṣṭasya karmasu |
yukta-svapnāvabodhasya
yogo bhavati duḥkha-hā ||17||

Yoga becomes the destroyer of pain for the one who is moderate in eating and recreation, who is moderate in exertion during activities, and who is moderate in sleep and wakefulness.

sarva-dharmān parityajya māmekam śaraṇaṁ vraja |
ahaṁ tvā sarva-pāpebhyaḥ mokṣayiṣyāmi mā śucaḥ ||18-66||

Abandoning all Dharmas, (of the body, mind, and intellect), take refuge in Me alone; I will liberate  you from all sins; grieve not.

brahmārpaṇaṁ brahma haviḥ brahmāgnau brahmaṇā hutam |
brahmaiva tena gantavyaṁ brahma karma samādhinā ||4-24||

BRAHMAN is the oblation; BRAHMAN is the clarified butter, etc., constituting the offerings; by BRAHMAN is the oblation poured into the fire of BRAHMAN; BRAHMAN verily shall be reached by him who always sees BRAHMAN in all actions.
