Nirvanashatkam
निर्वाणषट्कम्
मनोबुद्ध्यहङ्कारचित्तानि नाहं
न च श्रोत्रजिह्वे न च घ्राणनेत्रे ।
न च व्योमभूमिर्न तेजो न वायुः
चिदानन्दरूपः शिवोऽहं शिवोऽहम् ॥ १ ॥
mano-buddh-yahaṁkāra-cittāni nāhaṁ
na ca śrotra-jihve na ca ghrāṇa-netre |
na ca vyoma-bhūmir-na tejo na vāyuḥ
cid-ānanda-rūpah śivo’ham śivo’ham || 1 ||
(“I” in all the six verses of this poem refers to the Atman or the True Self.)
I am neither the mind nor the intellect, nor am I the ego or the memory; I am not the ears, the tongue, the nose and the eyes; I am not the sky or the earth, or the fire or the wind. I am the form of Consciousness-Bliss. I am Siva (auspiciousness). I am Siva (auspiciousness).
न च प्राणसंज्ञो न वै पञ्चवायुः
न वा सप्तधातुर्न वा पञ्चकोशः ।
न वाक्पाणिपादं न चोपस्थपायू
चिदानन्दरूपः शिवोऽहं शिवोऽहम् ॥ २ ॥
na ca prāṇa-saṁjño na vai pañca-vāyuḥ
na vā sapta-dhātur-na vā pañca-kośaḥ |
na vāk-pāṇi-pādaṁ na copasthapayū
cid-ānanda-rūpah śivo’ham śivo’ham || 2 ||
I am not the vital energy (Prana) nor the five-fold vital-airs, nor the seven bodily materials (dhatus); nor the five sheaths (kosha); I am not the speech, the hands, the feet, the organs of procreation and excretion. I am the form of Consciousness and bliss. I am Siva. I am Siva.
न मे द्वेषरागौ न मे लोभमोहौ
मदो नैव मे नैव मात्सर्यभावः ।
न धर्मो न चार्थो न कामो न मोक्षः
चिदानन्दरूपः शिवोऽहं शिवोऽहम् ॥ ३ ॥
na me dveṣa-rāgau na me lobha-mohau
mado naiva me naiva mātsarya-bhāvaḥ |
na dharmo na cārtho na kāmo na mokṣaḥ
cid-ānanda-rūpah śivo’ham śivo’ham || 3 ||
I have no aversion, no attachment; I have no greed or delusion; nor egotism, nor the touch of envy; I have no obligatory duty (to perform), and no wealth to acquire, and no craving for pleasure. Not being bound, I have no need for liberation. I am the form of Consciousness and Bliss. I am Siva. I am Siva.
न पुण्यं न पापं न सौख्यं न दुःखं
न मन्त्रो न तीर्थं न वेदा न यज्ञः ।
अहं भोजनं नैव भोज्यं न भोक्ता
चिदानन्दरूपः शिवोऽहं शिवोऽहम् ॥ ४ ॥
na puṇyaṁ na pāpaṁ na saukhyam na duḥkham
na mantro na tīrtham na vedā na yajñaḥ |
aham bhojanam naiva bhojyam na bhoktā
cid-ānanda-rūpah śivo’ham śivo’ham || 4 ||
I have transcended virtue and sin, pleasure and pain, sacred chants and pilgrimage, Vedas and sacrificial rituals. I am neither the act of enjoyment (action), nor the object of enjoyment, not the enjoyer (subject). I am the form of Consciousness and Bliss. I am Siva. I am Siva.
न मे मृत्युशङ्का न मे जातिभेदः
पिता नैव मे नैव माता न जन्मः ।
न बन्धुर्न मित्रं गुरुर्नैव शिष्यः
चिदानन्दरूपः शिवोऽहं शिवोऽहम् ॥ ५ ॥
na me mṛtyu-śankā na me jāti-bhedaḥ
pitā naiva me naiva mātā na janmaḥ |
na bandhur-na mitram gurur-naiva śiṣyaḥ
cid-ānanda-rūpah śivo’ham śivo’ham || 5 ||
I have no fear of death nor have I any distinction of caste; I have no father, no mother, no birth even, no relatives, and no friend. I have no teacher nor am I the disciple. I am the form of Consciousness and Bliss. I am Siva. I am Siva.
अहं निर्विकल्पो निराकाररूपः
विभुर्व्याप्य सर्वत्र सर्वेन्द्रियाणाम्।
सदा मे समत्वं न मुक्तिर्न बन्धः
चिदानन्दरूपः शिवोऽहं शिवोऽहम् ॥ ६ ॥
aham nirvikalpo nirākāra-rūpaḥ
vibhur-vyāpya sarvatra sarvendriyāṇām |
sadā me samatvam na muktir-na bandhaḥ
cid-ānanda-rūpah śivo’ham śivo’ham || 6 ||
I am devoid of all dualities and I am formless. I exist everywhere pervading all the senses. Always established in equanimity, I have neither liberation nor bondage. I am the form of Consciousness and Bliss. I am Siva. I am Siva.
